Course intent
Learn the knowledge and skills needed to build a range of techniques and design skills in the fascinating medium of watercolour. Gain an understanding of the diverse range of processes used whilst developing personal expression in your watercolour painting. You will establish a range of basic methods of watercolour painting through the use of sketchbook, photographs, found images or direct observation
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- the correct use of watercolour painting tools and paper including brush holds
- watercolour techniques, both traditional and modern
- distinguish the use of tone and ‘lighter darks’
- mix colour including both traditional and modern palettes.
- composition: leading eye, focus and ‘lost & found’
- perspective: eyeline levels, focal points and establishing different viewpoints
- creating texture
- the different tools, papers and materials used in watercolour painting
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is designed for beginners with the tutor teaching techniques and skills step-by-step. This means that all learners will be able to watch each part of the process before having a go themselves.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- watercolour pad (300gsm paper, surface not/textured)
- watercolour paints (tutor uses St. Petersburg Whitenights but Winsor and Newton Cotman Watercolours have good quality, reasonably priced half pan ‘pocket’ sets like the Sketchers Pocket Set of 12 half pans Amazon.co.uk: Winsor & Newton: Cotman Watercolour.)
- mixing palette (you can use a white plate or the lid of your paints to get started.
- brushes, round sizes 2, 4 & 6 or similar- any brushes you already have.Rosemary & Co make good brushes, and their Golden Synthetic series 301 size 2, short handle (7 inches) costs under £3.
- pencil
- eraser
- jar or container for water.
What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto other fine art courses with SAL, or other providers.
